The people of Israel had wandered the desert for 40 years after being freed from slavery in Egypt. Over and over, God had shown them his power, protection, and provision. But, they still held on to other gods. As they prepared to finally enter the promised land, Joshua gives them the words of God: "Choose this day whom you will serve." It is a call for the people to renew their commitment to the one true God, to renew their covenant promise with him and to put away the gods of other lands. We face the same call today. "Choose today whom you will serve." Oh, we don't likely have any statues of other gods on a shelf in our house, but we have plenty of things that we are consumed by, things we put our trust in, things that give us our sense of security. Those things can become our gods. The words from God spoken to his people so long ago are still echoing for us today. "Choose this day whom you will serve."
