Before Moses comes down the mountain with the Ten Commandments, the people get impatient and create an idol to worship. Even before they see the Ten Commandments, they have violated the first one. It's really quite perplexing when you look at all they have seen God do for them. "How soon they forget" as the old saying goes. Their impatience, combined with a desire to worship something they can see, led them into a really bad place. And it has terrible consequences.
